Both residents of Evergreen since the 1970's, Linda McComb Rathbun and Linda
Wells Ringrose decided in 1979 to convert their weekly hikes into a more serious venture of research for a guidebook which would cover the trails to the west of Denver and its suburbs.
Equipped with a notepad and camera, topographic maps, a compass and pencil,
previously unmapped trails were captured on paper, along with notes regarding the particular points of interest, and occasionally the pitfalls, of each trail explored. The two interviewed trails planners and reviewed historic notes. The result was the first edition of Foothills to Mount Evans in 1980.
New trails construction, the occasional closing of trails due to right-of-way issues, plus changes in locations of trailheads and trailhead parking sites have required revisious which resulted in a series of new editions, most recently the Seventh Edition in July, 2000.
